Work-Based Learning

Job Shadowing

Youth learn about the demands of a particular job and experience what it's like to be an adult in the workplace. Youth spend part of a day or so observing an employee on the job. Appropriate for late middle school to high school students.

Mentoring

Youth are assigned to an adult mentor who acts as an adviser, motivator, and constructive critic. Ideally the mentor is in a career the youth finds interesting.

Service Learning

Youth volunteer to perform community service in programs that equally emphasize learning and caring. Their volunteer experiences are integrated with academic course work. Currently only available in the Charlotte County area in partnership wih the Career and Service Center-Port Charlotte.

Internships

Youth work for an employer for a specified block of time to learn about a particular industry or occupation. If the experience is tied to school, they receive academic credit. They may or may not be paid for their time.

Youth Apprenticeship

Youth learn job skills and reinforce academic lessons under the guidance of a mentor in a specific occupational area. This experience is designed to lead them directly into a related post-secondary program, entry-level job, or registered apprenticeship (leading to certification). Youth may be paid for their time. Registered apprenticeships meet specific standards set by federal and state apprenticeship boards.
